The Pines-to-Palms
Highway was built between 1929 and 1932, opening in June 1932. It
connected Keen Camp (today's Mountain Center) with the Palm Springs-Indio
Highway (today's Highway 111). It was hailed as an engineering
marvel and was Riverside County's first scenic highway.

Ribbonwood
Ribbonwood was founded by Wilson
Howell as a stopping place along the Pines-to-Palms Highway. One
could rent a cabin or buy fresh fruits, vegetables, or a cold drink from
the brush ramadas there.
